New York Lawyer Wins 2012 Bert W. Levit Essay Contest

Aileen M. McGill, a 2010 graduate of University of Pennsylvania Law School and a second-year litigation associate at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler in New York   City, displays the plaque she received as winner of the 2012 Bert W. Levit Essay Contest, sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Professional Liability. Her winning essay was a legal memorandum to the general counsel of an international law firm on ethics questions concerning how the firm handles engagement letters, office restructuring and taking on new matters in a cross-jurisdictional scenario. In addition to receiving the contest’s $5,000 cash award, McGill was registered to attend the ABA’s Spring Legal Malpractice Conference in New York   City.

Open to members of the ABA Law Student Division and Young Lawyers Division, the contest recognizes outstanding legal essays on a predetermined topic. It is named in memory of Bert W. Levit, a founder of the California Fair Plan and other insurance companies.

The ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Professional Liability provides statistics and other information on legal malpractice claims, malpractice insurance, and malpractice prevention.
