DOUGLAS J. MELTON
Douglas Melton is a partner representing a
broad range of California employers with an emphasis on
architecture and other design firms, law firms, health care
professionals and other professional service providers, and
places of entertainment. Mr. Melton counsels employers on
avoidance of harassment and discrimination claims, wage and hour
issues, employment policies and procedures, employee handbooks,
and other day-to-day legal issues. He also defends employers in
all types of litigation and administrative proceedings in state
and federal courts and before the U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission, the California Department of Fair
Employment and Housing, and the California Department of Labor,
among others. Finally, Mr. Melton regularly writes and speaks on
current legal issues of interest to employers.
In addition, Mr. Melton has substantial
experience in general commercial litigation, the defense of
lawyers in professional liability matters (with an emphasis on
legal malpractice claims arising from underlying employment
cases) and insurance coverage/bad faith counseling and
litigation.
Mr. Melton has jury trial experience as well
as experience in binding arbitration and administrative
hearings.

SIGNIFICANT LITIGATION EXPERIENCE
Mr. Melton has substantial litigation and
trial experience representing employers, lawyers and insurers in
state and federal courts throughout California. He also has
significant experience representing clients in numerous
alternative dispute resolution settings including private and
court-supervised arbitrations, mediations and early neutral
evaluation conferences. Finally, Mr. Melton has represented
employers in various administrative proceedings before the
California Department of Labor, the California Department of
Fair Employment and Housing and the U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission.
PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND
ACTIVITIES
Mr. Melton is an active member of the Edward
J. McFetridge American Inn of Court and of the Bay Area Lawyers
for Individual Freedom. He is also a member of the San Francisco
Bar Association Labor and Employment Section. Mr. Melton is on
the Advisory Committee of the San Francisco LGBT Community
Center and provides the Center with pro bono employment
counseling services. He has also provided pro bono legal
services to indigent clients through the San Francisco AIDS
Legal Referral Panel.
